I am full of rage this evening, so to compensate I am going to bring you Links of Interest:

See, I feel more relaxed having taken a second look at all those links. Exhale.

Darth Vader deck shoes. I really, really love nerd craft.

As a side note, The Empire Strikes Back was the first Star Wars movie I ever saw, so the revelation that Vader was Luke’s father didn’t really impact me the way it should have. So, he’s Luke’s dad, so what? This is why you watch trilogies in order, kids.

Not being someone who has cable, I usually only encounter movie advertising in two places: at the movie theatre and on the subway. Every day for the last week or so I have got on the subway only to encounter the most obnoxious movie ads I’ve seen in a long time. They’re for the evocatively titled Valentine’s Day that comes out next week and they make me want to lovingly caress the third rail every time I see them.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the subway version of the ads that are displayed on either side of the subway doors, so I’ve had to approximate them here. (My ire is so great that it compels me to open Photoshop. I recognize I have a problem.)

While I haven’t managed to recreate the obviously finely crafted taglines for each ad, I think I’ve captured the unique and not remotely stereotypical attitude behind the sentiments. Except for “WHAT A DAY”, which is what that poster actually does say in real life.

Allow me to use an unordered list to express my hatred, since no one can refute an unordered list: (more…)

It’s pretty common knowledge that I eat terribly and am a lazy cook, so when I find a recipe I like I should probably share it. I went to a friend’s on the weekend and she made a lovely carrot soup that she found the recipe for on a milk carton of all places.

I’ve been looking forward to Shutter Island for what seems like at least six billion years now, but what I’m really starting to look forward to is the variety of shirtwaist dresses that are bound to show up in various incarnations.

Shutter Island

Speaking of which, I bought some vintage Vogue patterns yesterday and I’m looking pretty forward to making them. I am rather dismayed that none of them are terribly well designed for someone with my body shape, which is to say no shape at all.

Lee Daniels, director of Precious, had super awesome things to say about Kathryn Bigelow’s DGA win:

Your movie is as beautiful as your legs. You make me question my sexuality.

My guess is that no one would have said this to James Cameron.

I clearly take this all too seriously

Kathryn Bigelow won the Directors Guild of America award!

When last I checked, only six times in the history of the DGA awards has the winner not gone on to also win the Best Director category at the Oscars. Six. Six! So either there is a fluke chance that Bigelow doesn’t win the Oscar, or using the DGA awards to predict who wins that category remains a safe bet.

I had a problem last year at the Oscars where I had nothing to root for; I only had something (Slumdog Millionaire) to root against. My ideal Oscar year is one where I have a favourite but am lucky enough to have other films in the running that I get excited about even if my favourite doesn’t win the categories it’s nominated in; 2008 was a year like that, where I was pulling for There Will Be Blood but quite happy with No Country For Old Men. It doesn’t look like I’ll be getting that lucky this year; I’ll have something to root for in The Hurt Locker but I’ll be actively rooting against Avatar in all but the technical categories. It’s not that I disliked Avatar, but it disappoints me when a clearly superior film gets beaten out by inferior and expensive 3D orgasms.

After the Golden Globes, I was a little cranky about Avatar‘s win. I made the mistake of forgetting that the GGs are completely arbitrary and assumed that suddenly the tide was turning in James Cameron’s favour. But with both the PGA and DGA awards behind it, I feel a little more secure about The Hurt Locker now.

Oscar nominations come out on Tuesday, by the way. Second favourite day of the year!

also, I thought he was dead already, so…

If there’s one thing I owe J.D. Salinger, it’s the fact that Holden Caulfield’s propensity for saying that everything just kills him rubbed off on me in a completely infectious way when I was fifteen. From that point forward, everything just killed me and continues to kill me. Kills me dead, in fact.
