I don’t know if this is the case for other people, but I find that the movies I rewatch over and over are not, in fact, my favourite movies. I cannot for the life of me remember the last time I watched The Departed or High Fidelity but it don’t even bat an eyelash at the prospect of watching any one of these more than once a week.
that’s my favourite cheese as well
As a Gary Oldman fan, I am not unfamiliar with the pain and tragedy of working through an actor’s back catalogue on a quest to see everything they’ve ever done, only to encounter performances in middling to horrendous projects too upsetting to comprehend.
Which brings me to Michael Fassbender. Oh, Fassbender. I told myself a few weeks ago that I would not put myself through the Gary Oldman Experience™ for him because I couldn’t do it again, I just couldn’t. But the harder you resist these things, the more compelled you feel and so here I am. I am not unhelpful, though, and so I bring capsule reviews of the stuff I’ve seen thus far in hopes that it may save you some precious hours (or direct you to unintentional hilarity). Spoilers ahoy, as per usual.
I maintain this is my favourite day of the year despite frequent examples of why it should not be
I’ve been up since about 7:20am this morning on account of having to wake up early to watching Liverpool lose spectacularly to West Ham for no good goddamned reason, so these are my quick and tired thoughts on the Oscars.
I also want “The Way Back” to win Best Achievement in Makeup
It is now time for my favourite game: Opinions You Did Not Ask For, Academy Awards Edition! I’m too lazy to go through the whole big list, so I’m sticking to the big six (all acting categories, Best Director, and Best Picture). (more…)

We went on a tour of the new TIFF Bell Lightbox today, which was rather nice because I’ve still inexplicably not had a chance to go there yet. I had made a giant list of stuff I wanted to see there this fall but completely failed to follow through on thus far, so when the guy doing our tour mentioned the screening of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari that they’re doing with live musical accompaniment I promptly bought a ticket for it. I’m excited to hear (or not hear, as it were) how good a movie sounds when the theatre is sound proof.
I have challenges watching movies for the first time on DVD rather than in a theatre, so I’m excited that a lot of the TIFF year-round programming is comprised of older films. OLD! I think I managed to miss their limited run of Citizen Kane, though; I’m destined to never see this movie.
three of New York’s finest baseball teams: the New York Yankees, the New York Mets, and the Marseilles Dodgers
There goes my theory that Kate Winslet divorced Sam Mendes for signing the Roman Polanski petition:
Academy Award winners Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster and Christoph Waltz will join Matt Dillon in director Roman Polanski’s previously announced film adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s Tony-winning play God of Carnage, according to Deadline.com.The film will be set in Brooklyn, though the production will film in France. The film is being co-produced by French producer SBS and Constantin Film of Germany. Polanski worked on the screenplay alongside playwright Reza.
Yes, the only world in which it makes sense that France is an adequate stand in for Brooklyn is a world where people are inexplicably still clamouring to work with rapists. KATE, WHY.
this isn’t the finale you’re looking for
So, True Blood finale, eh? (more…)

Let’s talk about The Big Bang Theory. My family has been giving me nothing but rave reviews about it and after Jim Parsons won an Emmy last week, I finally decided to check it out. Then I promptly mainlined all three seasons, finishing last night. So, (spoilery) thoughts! (more…)
