Cyrus

I have nothing witty to say except don’t bother. Which is not witty.

IMDB Plot Synopsis A recently divorced guy meets the woman of his dreams. Then he meets her son.

  1. Seven years ago counts as recently divorced? Okay, IMDB.
  2. I do not like the reality TV film style of the so-called mumblecore genre, with it’s slightly shaky camera work, voyeuristic angles, and twitchy reaction zooms. I don’t watch Big Brother 45 for a reason. And, as with Humpday last year, I’m not that enamoured with stories and scripts (or improv?) that mistake listless banality for comedic awkwardness.
  3. I felt bad for Catherine Keener’s character’s long suffering fiancé.
  4. I thought perhaps that oedipal complexes were so prevalent in film that they’ve never bothered to make an actual movie explicitly about Oedipus, but after looking it up on IMDB and finding that there have been several productions (recent ones being non-Hollywood), I also found there was a short film version featuring Billy Dee Williams. You learn something new every day.
  5. I think the one part I truly thought was funny was when Cyrus was demonstrating his music skills for John. The super intense look on Jonah Hill’s face combined with his twitch dancing while manipulating all those little synthetic noises killed me.
  6. The ending was unexpected and overly cheesy. John and Cyrus have a heart to heart, John drives Cyrus home, and the reconciliation process between the two of them and Molly begins? Um… no.
  7. The best part was the air conditioning in the theatre. That alone was better than sitting in my non air conditioned apartment while it felt like 42°C outside with the humidity.
