Definitely, Maybe

Not as terrible as I thought it would be.

IMDB Plot Synopsis A political consultant tries to explain his impending divorce and past relationships to his 11-year-old daughter.

  1. Maybe I wasn’t expecting much or maybe it was because the trailer was a total piece of unfunny crap, but this movie was way better than I expected it to be. It was funny and charming in all the right places and I liked it a lot in spite of myself.
  2. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Ryan Reynolds in anything before, but I think I will grow to like him in comedies. He’s like a less angry version of Jason Lee in this, if Jason Lee were the kind of guy to make rom-coms. Actually, I’d like to see Jason Lee in a rom-com. That would be different.
  3. I feel like Ryan Reynolds is too young to have a daughter Abigail Breslin’s age. I mean, he certainly could, but I didn’t really get the “Oh hey, I’m a dad” vibe from him in this, at least not enough for me to completely suspend my disbelief.
  4. I don’t like this Elizabeth Banks woman. I don’t think I’ve liked her in anything I’ve seen her in. Something about her annoys the hell out of me. You have no idea how much I enjoyed seeing her in a typical mom haircut at the end of the movie.
  5. Most unexpectedly awesome part of the movie? Kevin Kline’s completely random role that was not mentioned at all in the trailer but was one of the best parts. Man, he looks effing old, guys. He did get some of the best lines, though, although you’d expect that given the fact that he’s playing a politics professor slash writer slash sexagenarian who loves to bed his thesis students. Guys like that are always awesome in their revoltingness and decrepitude.
  6. Did we doubt at any point that he’d end up with Isla Fisher? No, I don’t think we did.
  7. Speaking of which, how do you think she copes with being so freaking cute all the time? She’s adorable. I am a fan.
  8. I did enjoy the subplot of William working on the Clinton campaign back in the day. I thought it was timely.
  9. I mention this every time he shows up somewhere, but Billy Costigan’s cop-magnet of a cousin from The Departed was in this as a convenience store clerk. Nice.
