I sat down before Christmas and decided I was going to knit myself a Liverpool FC sweater. There is a deplorable lack of fan craft in the world of sports, and also a deplorable lack of decent fan clothing options for women, where everything either has to be pink or otherwise horribly designed. These are things I can rectify!

The pattern I used as the basis for the sweater is True North by Amy Swenson because I wanted to make a cardigan with a big shawl collar. The redesigned charts are made up of references to club history and identity.

The photo at the top of the post is of the sleeve cuffs, which both say “YNWA” and which is short for “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, the club’s theme song and de facto motto. I’m not too proud to admit I have openly wept when singing this song at a game.

The Liver bird is the symbol of Liverpool and features prominently on the club crest, and so it does here as well. The bird was stitched using a duplicate stitch after knitting the entire sweater, as the red yarn I used had a different elasticity than the other yarns and it was incredibly challenging to knit the bird by stranding it along with the rest of the motifs. (I tried. Twice. Ripped it out both times.)

They grey motifs in the background are based on some Turkish knitting patterns I found. I wanted an overall pattern rather than a solid background for the bird, and I liked the the symmetry and contrast I kept finding in Turkish motifs. And, of course, the Turkish patterns tie nicely into the Miracle at Istanbul, Liverpool’s miraculous comeback to win Champions League in 2005.

Liverpool has a proud history of success in European Competition, having won the European Cup five times. The years they won each cup are commemorated along the front of the sweater. L4 represents the postal code of Anfield, the club’s hallowed playing ground.

My absolute favourite Liverpool song of all time is “Poor Scouser Tommy“, which tells the tale of a young man who gets shot by the Nazis on the front lines and who, in his dying moments, starts to profess his love for his club. My favourite lines are “We support a team that’s dressed in red, a team that we all know, a team that we call ‘Liverpool’ and to glory we will go.”

It took about a month to to put together the charts and then just over another month to actually knit the sweater. I liked the original pattern enough that I might make it again (sans thematic content). This is the first sweater I’ve completed, and I feel like for someone who has only been knitting for a year, it’s a pretty decent accomplishment.

Hobbits are my least favourite species in Middle Earth but I still liked this.

My biggest fear with this movie was that I wouldn’t like it because I don’t actually like Hobbits all that much? I realise this is sacrilege for many people but I was always more interested in the Aragorn / Legolas / Gimli branch of the story than with anything to do with the tricksy Hobbitses. But! I loved Martin Freeman in this and find him to be a much more enjoyable Hobbit than I find Elijah Wood.

I didn’t love how they started it out on Bilbo’s 111th birthday again. I have the extended editions of LOTR and whenever I watch Fellowship of the Ring, I always start on the second disc so I can skip all the nonsense in the Shire revolving around Bilbo’s birthday shenanigans.

I think I am Middle Earth racist because I can’t tell the difference between orcs and goblins. They kept referring to The Pale Orc, except a whole bunch of them are pale which doesn’t exactly help differentiate between them. Mostly the goblins are really into loincloths, whereas orcs are a bit more militaristic with their fashion choices.

On the one hand, I’ve always liked Gimli so I don’t mind the film revolving around Gandalf, Bilbo, and their merry band of dwarfs. On the other hand, the dwarfs were pretty one-note and Gandalf’s propensity for counting them to make sure everyone was present felt less like comedic relief and more like an acknowledgement of “Yeah, there’s too many of these guys to keep track of, so even Gandalf doesn’t really give a fuck.” I suppose it would help if their names didn’t rhyme.

I also thought it was hilarious that they tried to create some “attractive-in-the-human-sense” dwarfs to make up for the fact that there is no Aragorn or Legolas in this one. Don’t know how young dwarfs are depicted in the book, but regardless this struck me as funny.

I’d like to give the stylists credit for the amazing variety of beard styles being sported by the dwarfs, especially on the king who had beard jewellery.

I dug the literal birds nest in Radagast’s hair, but did not dig the bird crap dripping down his matted locks.

I CAN’T TRUST SARUMAN KNOWING WHAT I KNOW ABOUT THE FUTURE!

There was a lot of juvenile humour in this that I didn’t really love, but I suspect I was not the target audience for the trolls’ snot jokes, etc.

The animal CGI did not look great in this. We saw a regular, old-fashioned screening (no 3D, no IMAX, no 42fps, etc.) so I don’t know if it was related to that or something else.

Riddles With Gollum™ was definitely my favourite part (and is also my new band name). As much as I am generally not interested in Hobbits, I do like what Gollum brings to the stories. The moment where he folded his hands politely on a rock and had hearts in his eyes for Bilbo was completely heartbreaking.

I believe it’s a genetic trait in the Baggins family that if you raise a single finger, any ring tossed in the air will fall precisely on that finger without any trouble whatsoever.

It felt long, but it moved along fairly well, so I guess that’s something.

File under "leads who are not the main characters in their own stories."

You know how much I love it when leads are not the focus of their own stories. The movie purports to be about FDR’s secret relationship with a super distant cousin, but it’s not a terribly engaging story and gets shown up by the comedic value of Royals Coming To America™. Daisy is super reserved, doesn’t say much of anything, and stairs off into space for huge segments of the film, which makes her relationship with FDR pretty one sided and not terribly interesting.

Also, since I don’t know much about FDR beyond the New Deal and polio, the whole “the F in FDR is for philanderer” revelation, with mistresses stashed within driving distance of his mother’s house in their own little cottages where he promised to move when he retired, was… not my favourite part of this movie. Yikes.

Unfortunately, I really wanted George VI and Queen Elizabeth to be played by Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter, which sadly they were not. Not that there was anything wrong with the actors playing these roles, just that The King’s Speech is clearly seared onto my brain.

I love when actors you assumed had stopped working years ago are actually still acting. Eleanor Bron, who was in the Beatles’ movie Help, played Daisy’s aunt in this.

More than any other time I’ve ever said this, there did NOT need to be shaky cam in this movie. Somehow my sisters managed not to notice this amazing filming technique, but I was pretty nauseated by the time the film was finished.

I think that I would have much preferred this as a harmless fish-out-of-water story about George and Lizzie going to America, eating hot dogs, and being aghast at the kinds of antics the ex-colonists are getting up to.

A fitting end to a pretty terrible series.

I’ve seen the previous four in theatres, I figured I’d make it an uneven five.

This movie actually contains this line: “You nicknamed my daughter after the Loch Ness Monster???”

You’d think that after raking in billions of dollars, they’d give these movies a bigger budget for special effects. There is a LOT of bad green screened action in this and it’s really, really noticeable. The effects for baby Renesmee were just terrifying to the point where she could have been Mark Renton’s cold turkey heroin withdrawal Baby Dawn hallucination in Trainspotting.

Bella has a completely appropriate reaction to finding out that Jacob imprinted on her infant daughter. Edward has a perhaps inappropriate reaction to her reaction — you shouldn’t really enjoy watching your wife beat the shit out of someone — but at the same time all these characters are so terrible that you kind of want to do the same?

I was really psyched Charlie seemed to have found himself a lady friend because I had hoped this would end his downward spiral into alcoholism. It took literally until Christmas for him to be seen with a beer in his hand. Go Charlie!

If every last one of the Cullens knew that they’d have to move immediately after Bella became a vampire beacuse they’d have to pretend she was dead, why did they go and buy Bella and Edward a charming little cottage and have it decorated so quaintly? “Here is our gift to you, which you can never use because we’re officially on the run because you two douches did something you weren’t supposed to do.” Worst gift ever.

Sub-point: Alice, stop trying to force your interests and lifestyle onto Bella. You already ruined her wedding by turning into your dream wedding, there’s no need to give the poor girl an entire dressing room filled with clothes she’ll never wear because she doesn’t care about this stuff. Honestly.

I really, really hate Alice, in case this hasn’t been made abundantly clear several times over the last few years.

Rosalie is sporting some majorly unfortunate Scouse brow in this movie. I can’t remember if she was a victim of this in the past, but she’s definitely suffering in this one.

The point of Joe Anderson’s character was what, exactly? He kept skulking around like there was going to be some major reveal about his character and then… nothing.

The giant fight scene was all a premonition in Alice’s brain! Of course it was! That was disappointing.

Michael Sheen, who is the best part of these movies, played Aro like an undead male version of Imelda Staunton’s Dolores Umbridge.

Bella’s friends were tragically absent from this instalment, thus making the movie approximately ten times less funny than Part 1.

Bella lunging around the forest, tackling mountain lions, is this movie’s gift to the world.

I’ve been very busy lately making… stuff. Mostly knitted stuff, but some paper crafty stuff too.

I’ve decided to not put up my Christmas tree this year beacuse it’s a hassle to take down again (i.e. I usually take it down in February, oops) but after several years of thinking about it, I finally got around to making a wreath for my front door.

This paper Christmas wreath tutorial was my starting point, but I put it together slightly differently after forgetting the construction techniques completely when I went to buy supplies. Things I changed:

My wreath form is an actual styrofoam wreath form (16″ diameter) rather than just a circle on card stock.

I also wrapped the wreath in scraps of blue fabric I had lying around in case any of those bits shone through.

I pinned all the leaves on instead of stapling them. I keep telling myself this means I can reuse the wreath form, but who are we kidding?

I used scrapbook paper instead of wrapping paper. It’s a little thicker and a little less prone to curling naturally on its own, so I curved it a bit by wrapping it around my finger.

Instructions for tying a full bow.

I’ve also been knitting continuously.

The GAP-tastic Cowl for both myself and my sister Audrey. I could make about thirty more of these easily and not get sick of the pattern.

The Thermis cowl for my sister Amelia.

A pair of boot toppers. Sub-point: people on Pinterest are TERRIBLE at linking to the actual source of a project. I’d seen these boot toppers all over the place on Pinterest and once spent about three hours tracing the re-pin path backwards to try and find the origin of the image. Eventually, when I actually bothered to look up boot toppers on Ravelry, I finally found the actual pattern. [I have subsequently repinned the boot toppers with a proper link so no one else has to waste time the way I did.]

A pair of mittens for Audrey to go with the toque I made her.

An adorbs coffee cup cozy. At first this felt a little too twee for me (a sweater for your mug? really?) but I think it actually does help retain the heat of your beverage so I made one for work and one for at home.

I’m currently knitting a pair of mittens for a coworker while simultaneously working on a needlessly complex chart for a sweater I hope to make (using someone else’s pattern as the base).

White guys save the day! Again!

Daniel Day-Lewis is immense. You already knew that. I am perfectly content with him only acting once every seventeen million years when he feels like it because his output is always, always worth the wait. I don’t think this is a showy performance, which helps; his Lincoln is at his best when he’s quietly telling various tales and parables to his friends, his soldiers, his political colleagues. I really did love him in this.

You can tell this is another Steve Wants An Oscar™ movie, but I do not think Steve is getting an Oscar with this. He might get a nomination for those Academy members who are feeling generous and who applaud seemingly liberal subject matter, but he won’t actually win. [Nor should he.] DDL deserves a nod; I haven’t seen enough this year to have an opinion whatsoever on whether or not he’d deserve the win.

John Williams didn’t use any of his John Williams moments that he recycles in all his other movies.

It seems somewhat problematic that a film surrounding the idea of making slavery illegal features so few black people. Old white guys deciding they know what’s best for everyone else is obviously nothing new, but with the exception of the two men at the very start of the film who get rudely interrupted by the two white dudes obsessed with the Gettysburg Address, the only black people with lines in the film are servants of some kind. I get that the passing of an amendment by men whose very positions exist at the exclusion of those the amendment is meant to help means that we’re going to spend a lot of time in the company of Whitey, but choosing this particular angle to this particular story doesn’t do much to avoid reinforcing the importance of the dominant historical voice in America. So… yeah.

On the other hand, I do think it’s important that they made it clear so much else was both riding on and being thwarted by the 13th Amendment. The bits about Lincoln’s presidency that show up in pop culture largely revolve around “Lincoln freed the slaves!” and that the Civil War was fought over slavery, neither of which are exactly true. I liked how the passing of the amendment was showed as a bargaining chip in ending the Civil War more hastily and that, unsurprisingly, much of the support of the amendment comes not from people saying “Hey, maybe we should be decent fucking people for five minutes” but because of other political/economic/social interests they might have. Lincoln, I feel you, bro: sometimes you really do need to just do things for the good of the people even if they have no idea that it’s what’s right.

I think for a movie revolving around the passing of a piece of legislation they do a decent job of keeping the pace moving along. I’d like to know more about Thaddeus Stevens after seeing this, as I think we need more sarcastic and witty politicians in the world. He’s sassy!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt really didn’t add anything to the film and so I found his presence really distracting.

I was quite happy when people referred to Jefferson Davis as “Jeff.” AMAZING.

It really could have ended as Lincoln walked away and off to the theatre. I’m pretty sure anyone seeing this movie knows he was assassinated.

Every time I hear the name “Lincoln”, I mostly think of Joan of Arc from Clone High saying “Gabe… Lincoln.” Sorry, Steve.

I'm going to be really depressed when Daniel Craig is too old to play this role anymore.

The first half seemed like a very different movie than the second half. I definitely preferred the latter.

Javier Bardem was excellent in a way that Bond villains have not been excellent in some time. He was the deliciously campy mastermind of old without falling into the easy-to-mock trap that so many of his predecessors fall into. He’s one part classic Bond villain mixed with one part Heath Ledger’s Joker; Silva ultimately has some sort of end goal, but he’s also okay with just watching the world burn. I’m not overly convinced his character is dead given everything he’d been through up until that point, so I’m not-so-secretly wondering if he’s meant to be a darker, more serious Jaws for a modern age, what with those teeth of his.

Not sure that Sam Mendes really needed to film so much of this in silhouette. Sure, it looked super cool in scenes like the one where Bond takes out the assassin in Shanghai, but sometimes maybe I’d actually like to see more of what’s going on? I’m blaming Mendes and not Roger Deakins because I don’t really recall Deakins doing this kind of thing so heavily before.

I liked the bit in the National Gallery and thought art was going to play some part in the film after that guy in Shanghai seemed to be viewing a Modigliani. Nope!

Thrilled they brought Moneypenny back. I like that she has actual field experience, I liked her rapport with Bond, and I’m hoping they use her as something more than just the gatekeeper to M’s double-doored office in the future films.

Also, the straight razor scene. Um.

Casino Royale did this a bit, but there were a lot of nice nods to the earlier films in this ones, from the really obvious stuff surrounding the return of Bond’s Aston Martin to things like Bond jumping across the back of the komodo dragon, which I’m convinced is a shout out to Roger Moore jumping across the backs of crocodiles in Live and Let Die.

The Churchill War Rooms are my absolute favourite museum in London, hands down, and so I was super excited when they decided to move MI6 underground into part of the old cabinet war rooms. I thought M’s little bulldog figurine was a nice secondary tie-in with Churchill.

Clearly, I really, really loved the dialing back of everything to more historic setting for the films without making them too retro or kitschy.

Sévérine was disappointing in her limited role has a woman caught up in a prostitution ring (I guess?) who ultimately gets beat up and shot for her trouble. I suppose the Disposable Woman is a key character in nearly every Bond film, but it would be nice if we could move on from these tropes in future films.

Loved the homo-eroticism in this one, especially when Bond went toe-to-toe with Silva and suggested that perhaps this wouldn’t be his first gay interlude. Amazing. I suppose it was only a matter of time after Le Chiffre also congratulated Bond on being super attractive.

Skyfall may be the most depressing place in Scotland. I loved how they took a Kevin McAllister approach to lo-fi domestic warfare: “This is my house, and I have to defend it.”

When M was breaking all the light bulbs, I thought for a minute she was going to leave the shattered bits of glass just inside a window for someone to step on.

Rugged Highlands Bond is my new favourite Bond look. The suits, yes, but casual stag hunting Bond? Yes.

I loved how when Bond’s parents died, he basically hid in a cupboard under the stairs for two days. It made me want someone to show up and say to the young orphan, “Yer a wizard, James.”

The opening chase scene was ridiculous in all the typical ridiculous Bond ways — somehow the motorcycles on the rooftops made this the case, more so than the backhoe-on-a-train for me — so I liked how basic the rest of the action sequences became afterwards. I say this every time, but whenever they pare something down and remove bits that are apparently “quintessential” to Bond, I often don’t end up missing those things.

Speaking of which, I hadn’t missed Q at all in the Craig films and, unsurprisingly, I appreciate that he too isn’t into exploding pens and other ridiculous gadgets. You can have cool technology without being silly, as Bond’s palm-print activated gun demonstrates.

I’m 88% sure that Silva’s island is where Leonardo DiCaprio ends up when he and Marion Cotillard go too many dream levels too deep in Inception.

Daniel Craig apparently still has two more Bond films on his contract, but everything about this seemed to have been structured in a way that could feasibly make this his last. [I'm not saying I want this to be his last, mind you.] A lot of the things set in motion in Casino Royale for his character seem to come full circle in this and, for me, Bond’s relationship with M really has been the emotional centre of Craig’s three films. I’ve said before that I really and truly love a broken, emotional Bond and now that they’ve killed off Judi Dench’s M [THAT SCENE, OMG], I feel like that chapter in Craig’s Bond’s life is closed.

I’ve been a complete failure at posting about the travelling I’ve been fortunate enough to do this year, mostly due to laziness because I’m good that way. I only managed to post about the soccer-related portion of our trip to Boston, New York City, and Baltimore in July, but I also spent a long weekend in San Francisco in August after I got to go to San Diego for work, which I naturally also failed to post about.

But! Amelia and I went to England (and Scotland) for two-and-a-half weeks at the end of September / start of October, and I am now forcing myself to write about it before I forget everything. The general organizing theme of this trip was called “How Many Soccer Games Can We Go To In Two Weeks?”. [This shocks you, I'm sure.] Onwards, to Part 1!

Days 1-2: Liverpool

We arrived in Liverpool in the early afternoon, and after checking into our hotel we went to Western Approaches, the Liverpool War Museum. Western Approaches housed the government’s key offices working on the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II and essentially it aims to be the kitschier side of the Cabinet War Rooms in London.

Lots of bad mannequins abound, here. We were surprised to find at the end of the exhibit a room dedicated to Canada’s involvement in the Battle of the Atlantic, which you pretty much never hear about outside of Canadian history books.

Our main reason to start out our trip in Liverpool was to go to the match against Manchester United. We had chosen our vacation dates long before the fixture list had been announced and when we found out the first game during that period was Man United at home, I was a little dismayed because I knew it would be impossible to get tickets.
We ended up getting match day hospitality tickets because that was the only way we’d be able to buy them far enough in advance. This meant we got pre-game brunch at the Isla Gladstone Conservatory in Stanley Park, which was a hilariously random experience. They handed us mimosas upon entering! Hilarious.

This game was the first home match after the new report by the Hillsborough Independent Panel came out, which not only confirmed everything that the victims’ families and the club had been saying for years about the truth of the disaster but also revealed a lot more disturbing information about how many more people could have survived if it had been dealt with properly. It’s really hard as a North American fan who was young when this happened to really find an appropriate way of observing and connecting to Hillsborough and the subsequent justice campaign without co-opting someone else’s grief as your own; it’s a huge, huge, huge deal for the club, though, and I think they’re really good at giving those who may not have been directly affected by it various inroads into at least understanding and supporting those who do.

Getting to attend this game was an incredibly emotional thing. Before the game we did our usual walk up and down Walton Breck Road and we went into the Hillsborough Justice Campaign shop for the first time. We bought the campaign pins and made donations to the cause; the women there seemed alternately surprised and touched that some random foreigners felt compelled to contribute, but how could we not? The Hillsborough Memorial itself was the most covered in scarves, flowers, and notes than I’d ever seen it previously. People had tied things to the Shankly Gates when they ran out of room in front of the memorials, and there were a lot of touching letters amongst the flowers; some were written to those who had died, and others were from fans from rival clubs expressing that tribalism can be put aside when it comes to things like this. It was pretty upsetting, not going to lie.

This was, and will probably always be, the most emotional match I’ve ever attended. The club put together their largest mosaic ever, with “96″ showing in the lower Anfield Road end, “JUSTICE” on the lower Centenary Stand, and “THE TRUTH” displayed in The Kop. Manchester United wore 96s on the backs of their training jackets in honour of the victims, and before kick off Stevie G and Ryan Giggs released 96 red balloons into the sky. Normally you’re required to sit down when the match starts but for a full minute everyone stood and sang “Justice for the 96″. The atmosphere was fantastic and definitely went well beyond the crowd wanting the team to win the game (spoiler: they lost). I feel really lucky that we got to be there.

I’ve rewatched this game since getting home and just the sound of the crowd on TV alone is something to behold, despite the fact that it barely approximates what the crowd sounded like in the stadium. Anfield is amazing.

Day 3: The Lake District

Amelia is doing her PhD in English and although the Romantics are not necessarily her favourite, we’d heard that the Lake District was beautiful and fancied a day trip. We booked a day long coach tour that took us through a sizeable portion of the district and although this was probably the second rainiest day we spent in England, it sort of just added to the spooky atmosphere.

Throughout our vacation we were often the youngest people on our tours, because apparently we have old people interests. Much of the tour was spent on the bus, which was fine, and at half the stops only we and a few other people would get out to actually look at stuff and take pictures. Fine by us!
Highlights included the Honister Slate Mine that basically looked like the entrance to Mordor, the Crofter’s Pie I ate for lunch in Keswick, and the Castlerigg Stone Circle. Castlerigg is infinitely less famous than Stonehenge but perhaps infinitely cooler because there are no barriers, no crowds, and you can walk around in and amongst the stones. Definitely go there if you’re ever in the Lake District.

Day 4: York

We were told once we got to York that Yorkshire had received two months’ worth of rain in the span of two days. The River Ouse was completely flooded and it continued to rain the one day we were there.

We spent the morning at York Minster, which is every bit as fantastic as they say. It’s not as cluttered with graves and memorials as Westminster Abbey and thus has far fewer famous inhabitants, but there is a lot of good history here, especially in relation to the War of the Roses, and they’ve done amazing restoration work with their stained glass. The chapter house was especially beautiful.

Bonus for me: we discovered that there was a Bishop of York named Geoff Plantagenet, so that was hilarious (Jeff/Geoff being my go-to douchebag name).

We spent some time walking the city’s medieval walls before ending up at the Richard III Museum, which I loved. My dad is a bit of a Richard III enthusiast, which was the primary motivator in going here, but once we got inside it immediately became clear it was right up my alley. It’s clearly been put together by other Richard III obsessives; what they obviously lack in interpretive planning skills they make up for in spades with enthusiasm. The museum is exactly what you think might happen if you put together a museum using only work taken from a Grade Five class. The faux-newspapers were my favourites, I think, but there were a lot of other bad mannequins, portraits, and things that added to the amazing kitschy value of the place. Amelia bought the amazing DVD they played on a loop that had obviously been put together by their undergraduate intern majoring in history, interviewing his fellow students about Richard III and featuring the actor who founded the museum who might actually think he’s Richard III reincarnated. This place is solid gold.

We went to Clifford’s Tower, which is all that remains of the old York Castle, and which prompted us to constantly run around saying “Wallace has sacked York!” We went to Castle Museum which, spoiler alert, has nothing to do with the castle; it’s mostly a weird collection of random Victorian stuff, but there’s a neat recreation of a Victorian street in the basement, so that eventually justified the price of admission. We also went to the Merchant Adventurer’s Hall, which is the largest half-timber hall in York. We thought all you’d get to see would be the hall itself — holy slanted floors, Batman — but they had an exhibit on the plague, hygiene, and medicine in Medieval Europe in their basement, and we all know I love the plague.

Day 5: Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Due to the flooding, we were late getting into Newcastle and thus missed our tour of St. James’ Park, Newcastle United’s home ground. We weren’t too fussed, given that we were worried about whether or not we’d even be able to get to Newcastle in the first place, so we rejigged our plans and went to the Castle Keep, a.k.a. the new castle. We also went to the Great North Museum, where the highlight was watching one of the employees put a snake in a rubbermaid container, only to have the snake try and sneak out.

We never intended to see much of Newcastle as we were primarily using it as a base for visiting Edinburgh and Hadrian’s Wall, but it wasn’t my favourite place that we’d been. Everyone keeps saying to me “Oh, it’s very industrial” which, yes, my favourite city in England is also industrial, so…? Our hotel staff were delightful, though, so go Newcastle.

Day 6: Edinburgh

Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1959) is one of my family’s collective favourite movies so we were very excited to go to Edinburgh Castle, which features prominently in the opening scene of the film. We got there early in hopes of missing most of the crowds and generally managed to be effective in this regard.

There’s tons of stuff to see here, including the Stone of Scone and Scotland’s National War Museum. The War Museum was quite impressive, and we were surprised to find lists of the various Canadian Highland regiments from WWI and WWII amongst the other lists of the dead that they had. The stained glass in the building was also spectacular, including one window that featured biplanes and zeppelins.

The gift shop actually had the official Maple Leaf Tartan in stock, so I bought a lovely scarf that I’ve been wearing all fall; we were lucky because they said they’d only just received them about a month earlier. After we left the castle, we popped into the Tartan Weaving Mill, which is mostly a tourist trap but also showed you the logistics of how tartan gets made.

We met up with Jessica for lunch; we’ve known each other online for nearly a decade, so it’s kind of funny that a Canadian and an American only ended up meeting in Scotland of all places for the very first time. Being the super awesome person that she is, Jessica had an excellent itinerary planned for us for the afternoon, starting with lunch at the The Elephant House, where JK Rowling wrote heaps of pages of Harry Potter.

The walls in the washroom are covered in quotes from the books, of course.

We popped in briefly to St. Giles Cathedral, where Amelia made good use of her £2 photography pass, before we went to The Real Mary King’s Close. Because I don’t know anything about Edinburgh, I didn’t realise that they basically raised the city and then built on top of the old foundations, leaving the old roads intact and navigable beneath the city. The tour was neat and of itself, but we think our guide was either completely stoned or had a sense of humour so dry that he seemed stoned. No matter, we had fun anyway, and Jessica had done the tour multiple times in the past and was able to fill in the bits of info that the guide should have been sharing with us. I have no photos of any of this, unfortunately, because it was so goddamned dark.

We then moved on to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which is the Queen’s official residence in Edinburgh. Definitely the place for fans of Mary Queen of Scots, although my favourite room had to be the one featuring dozens of portraits of Scottish monarchs painted to have a family resemblance to the obviously narcissistic Charles II.

We then walked up to Regent Gardens for a view of the city from up high. We did a bit more walking through some beautiful parks and essentially decided that we’ll definitely have to come back to Edinburgh in the future as it seems like a really fantastic city.

Day 7: Hadrian’s Wall Country

Amelia’s favourite era in history is the Roman era so we dedicated a day to visiting the various Roman sites in the north of England. We started out at the Romany Army Museum, which is a pretty good museum given that it’s in the middle of nowhere, before moving on to Vindolanda.

Vindolanda was pretty impressive, both in the scale of the ruins as well as the collection of archaeological finds in the museum. The Vindolanda Writing Tablets are apparently Britain’s top treasure (i.e. of artifacts found within Britain, not stolen from somewhere in antiquity) and it was neat to see something that provided insight into random bits of daily Roman life, including an invitation to a birthday party. Also, the collection of Roman shoes both here and at the Roman Army Museum was weirdly extensive.

We ended our Roman day at Housesteads Roman Fort, which is the most complete Roman fort on Hadrian’s wall.

Also, there are sheep just wandering about in and around the fort because of course there are.

And that’s the nothern part of our trip! We moved south to London, Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, and then back to Liverpool, but those are subjects for another day.

It's probably not at all necessary to your life to see this.

When Audrey described this to me as a Zac Efron movie and found a synopsis somewhere that involved alligator hunting, I thought this was a comedy. Nope!

Like most people, the only other film by Lee Daniels that I’ve seen is Precious and if the extreme fetishization of poverty in both that film and this one is going to be a major component of his work going forward, I’ll probably avoid his future work. We have “southern hillbillies” (swampbillies?) who definitely fall into the extreme end of depictions of rural, illiterate, inbred communities, and I’m starting to think that Daniels inexplicably gets off on this sort of thing. This movie is based on a book so I don’t know how much of this depiction is from the book and how much is Daniels’ creation, but ugh.

Has it ever ended well for anyone who has ever decided to strike up a romance, through letters, with a prisoner they’ve never met?

I don’t think I dislike Matthew McConaughey. That was a weird revelation.

Nicole Kidman’s false eyelashes needed their own billing in the credits.

This felt really, really long.

It’s too bad that this movie revolved around this attempt to exonerate a guy who may have been a victim of judicial malpractice rather than around the relationship between Zac Efron’s and Macy Gray’s characters. There was the potential for a lot of depth to be built up in the latter story, whereas the former was pretty thin. Alas.
