Hooked

Had the makings of a really excellent comedy, but unfortunately it’s a drama.

IMDB Plot Synopsis The story of some ordinary people who undergo a relationship crisis, as well as a consciousness crisis - people who find themselves in an extreme situation and give up their principles.

  1. CAMERA SHAKE ALERT. FUCK. You know how I feel about this.
  2. I was hoping this would turn into some psychological thriller but it managed to achieve an incredible degree of mundaneness despite it’s subject matter. Mihai and Mahi accidentally hit a prostitute with their car and, thinking she’s dead, put her in the back seat so they can take her body somewhere and dispose of her… only she wakes up and ingratiates herself into their lives and tries to act as a wedge between them. This should make for some decent drama, no? No. No one cares about these people and their boring relationship dramas.
  3. The prostitute, Ana, was wearing a bra that did not fit her terribly well. I kept hoping one of those old ladies from the lingerie department at Sears would suddenly appear with a tape measure and going “Tsk, tsk” at her. This did not happen.
  4. Someone brought up during the Q&A that there were a lot of fantasy elements in this movie, like how it looked like Ana drowned but then was alive again at the end of the film, how there were these sort of archetypal and mythological minor characters like the woodsman who kept appearing, etc., as if Mahai and Mahi stepped into another dimension when they hit the prostitute. I feel like if this angle had been played up a little more, it would have been more interesting.
  5. IMDB suggests that if I liked this film, I will also like Chicago. I’m not really seeing the connection between the two films.
