- I feel like the Dreamworks animated films are too referential for their own good sometimes. There are some references that are nice and some that are just too obvious. A good example is when the President is presented with a keyboard in order to communicate with one of the aliens and he plays (presumably) the same notes they play in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It’s a nice nod for the parents in the audience who have seen the film but it’s not meant to be entertaining in and of itself. They follow this with the President breaking into the Beverly Hills Cop theme song on the keyboard, and I assume this is supposed to send the kids in the audience into gales of laughter due to the exaggeratedness of what is being depicted. But it’s not terribly funny. It’s put in there for the kids to laugh at without any real context and that kind of depletes the humour right away. It was the same with all the other references to other sci-fi TV shows and movies. Put the references in there, but don’t draw so much attention to them.
- If I had to choose one Seth Rogen film to see this movie, it would be this over Observe and Report. B.O.B. was cute and brainless and funny. At the opposite end of the spectrum, I can’t willingly give my money to Observe and Report because apparently there’s a date rape scene in it that is apparently played for laughs. That is not okay. B.O.B. falling in love with the Jello was adorable. Easy jokes, sure, but that doesn’t make them less funny.
- The girl power message was kind of bland, but since it’s aimed at children I’m okay with it being this simplified.
- The “hang in there” kitten poster in Susan’s cell was HILARIOUS.
- I do not know why, but the funniest line in the movie for us was when Gallaxhar said “Omega Quadrant? Lame.” HAHAHA.
- We saw this in 3D and it was neat if predictable in the same way that Coraline in 3D was, what with all the stuff put into the film only for the purpose of jumping out of the screen at you (the paddle ball at the start, for instance).
Monsters vs Aliens
Pretty average, but an enjoyable average.
IMDB Plot Synopsis When a meteorite from outer space hits a young girl and turns her into a giant monster, she is taken to a secret government compound where she meets a ragtag group of monsters also rounded up over the years.
