But, Rachel McAdams was awful as Irene; I think script had 50% to do with how bad she was. Her being miscast accounted for the other 50%. The movie was best when Sherlock was with Watson which makes it odd that he is by himself so often. Having read the original draft, I can say her character was seriously downsized so that probably made her character feel extraneous. I thought the central mystery was too barney-style for a Sherlock Holmes investigation and as you said, not nearly as interesting as the banter between the main characters.
