  • Why Guys Really Hate Being Called ‘Creepy’
At the heart of the "anti-creep shaming campaign" is a concerted effort to discourage women from relying on their instincts to protect themselves from harm. Laying aside its likely etymology, calling a dude an "asshole" is a way of labeling him a jerk. Plenty of people can be jerks without being predatory. On the other hand, calling a dude "creepy" labels him as a potential threat; a creep may not be imminently violent, but there's almost always a sense that he shows consistent disregard for a woman's physical or psychological space. This is why, as Wakeman wrote, "it's a really freaking dangerous idea to twist a woman's open, honest communication about her boundaries/expectations into ‘creep shaming' that victimizes men."
  • Rape culture in up to 140 characters · londonfeminist
"Yesterday, Ched Evans, a footballer, was sentenced to five years in prison for raping a nineteen year old woman. This is what some people on Twitter had to say. [...] This is rape culture in 140 characters or less. A culture in which after the defendant is convicted by a jury on the higher standard of proof, the woman is accused of being a liar, a money grabber, a gold digger, a ho, a drunk, a promiscuous, publicity-seeking bitch, while the "poor" rapist has had his life ruined."

  • The Definitive Footy Blog Guide on How to Pick a Football Club | The Footy Blog
"I’ll begin by saying this is an old, controversial topic in North American circles, and the subject of bitter cultural debate. Each approach comes with their advantages and their weaknesses. Before we get into them, let’s agree on the Two Principle Commandments of supporting a football club.
    I. Thou Shalt Not Support More Than One Club Not Separated by a Domestic League or at Least Three Divisions.
II. Thou Shalt Not Switch Teams, Ever. You Are X Until You Die."
  • Women United F.C.: A Launch of Its Own – NYTimes.com
"Colvin parlayed her burgeoning passion for soccer into a fledgling business, Women United F.C., an online soccer community for women that launched March 13. The site is committed to two central goals: building M.L.S.’s female fan base and providing women with a safe haven to discuss soccer on their terms."
  • Major League Soccer Blowhard Says Female Superfans Are Totally Not Hot
While I agree that this guy is clearly a douche, I'm confused by some of the fan reaction. People are rightly objecting to Borg acting as if female fans should exist to please men… and then turn around and make CafePress t-shirts that also objectify female fans.

  • Night Witches – Wikipedia
” "Night Witches" is the English translation of Nachthexen, a World War II German nickname, for the female military aviators of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment, known later as the 46th "Taman" Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, of the Soviet Air Forces. The regiment was formed by Colonel Marina Raskova and led by Major Yevdokia Bershanskaya. The regiment flew harassment bombing and precision bombing missions against the German military from 1942 to the end of the war. At its largest size, it had 40 two-person crews. It flew over 23,000 sorties and is said to have dropped 3,000 tons of bombs. It was the most highly-decorated female unit in the Soviet Air Force, each pilot having flown over 1,000 missions by the end of the war and twenty-three having been awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union title. Thirty of its members died in combat.”
  • Bride surprises groom at wedding with Champions League song | Dirty Tackle – Yahoo! Sports
"While traditionalists might blast Pachelbel's Canon on the day of their nuptials, this bride satiated her groom-to-be's love of the beautiful game by organizing a surprise rendition of the Champions League anthem."

This is undeniably amazing. Die Besten, les grande equipes, THE CHAMPIONS!!

  • Racist Hunger Games Fans Are Very Disappointed
“The tumblr Hunger Games Tweets has collected a smattering of Twitter postings, with the goal of exposing "Hunger Games fans on Twitter who dare to call themselves fans yet don't know a damn thing about the books." What people are saying is disappointing, sad, stomach-churning, and just plain racist.”

Things I Like #1: Old Lady Fans

Things I Like #1: Old Lady Fans

Oh, internet, I’m having a week full of fail when it comes to people Not Getting It™; however, in an attempt to be more productive with my energies, I thought it might be more useful to spend time talking about things like instead of wallowing on things I hate. So I bring you Things I Like.

Witness the gloriousness that is Celia Hodkin, who has been a Manchester City fan since 1933. I love old lady fans for their obviously unparalleled dedication to their team, especially when the team has a less than illustrious history. I love old man fans, too, but old lady fans have the bonus badassery of having been fans when their club’s supporters were staunchly and proudly male-dominated in ways that made it a challenging environment in which to be a female fan. (Which is clearly no longer the case in this post-sexist society!)

Old lady fans also have the uncompromising ability to give loudmouth fans vicious death stares when necessary. They need to recruit these women to be match day stewards; I have no doubt they’d be able to keep the rabble in line. They know what’s important when it comes to supporting your team and being an obnoxious imbecile does not fall into that category.

Finally, I love groups of old lady fans. This is clearly a case where if one is good, many is better. One of the Premier League matchday promos features three old lady fans knitting giant fan scarves, the LFC and Everton ladies giving the Man City fan between them a good-natured elbow in the side, and it basically sums up everything I love about old lady fans.

In summary: I hope to be like this in sixty years.

"But when you say that sexism and racism and heterosexism and cissexism have to be in the narrative or the story won’t be realistic, what you are saying is that we humans literally cannot recognise ourselves without systemic prejudice, nor can we connect to characters who are not unrepentant bigots. Um, yikes. YIKES, you guys."

  • What We Talk About When We Talk About Female Candidates: She’s Crazy! – this ain’t livin’
"Much of the rhetoric surrounding Bachmann is lively, some of it is very interesting, and some of it sadly highlights a serious gender issue in the way people talk about politics. Many people on the left are found of painting Bachmann as crazy. She’s too crazy to be President. Her politics are crazy. Male candidates with similar, and sometimes more extreme, views aren’t crazy, they’re just evil, or bad. Rick Perry, for instance, is routinely highlighted as an example of a really terrible GOP candidate because his politics are appalling. But few people call him crazy."

Greatest decision I’ve made in the last two months? Deciding to go to Liverpool for a long weekend. We left Thursday, got back yesterday, and had a glorious two-and-a-half days in the city.

Oh, Liverpool. As Amelia succinctly noted on Twitter, “Don’t you have to be able to go to Stoke and win if you have serious aspirations?” One would think, but I am not an expert on these things.
