“Yes, indeed, The Godfather is masterful. The Sopranos? We never missed an episode. But you want to talk about a movie that leaves a mark? Twenty years after the release of GoodFellas, the good people behind it—Scorsese, Liotta, De Niro!—re-create the making of the truest, bloodiest, greatest gangster film of all time.” - Keith Richards on the Cover of Rolling Stone | Rolling Stone Music | Photos

“Immediately one is struck by the empathy shown poor Ken by the Hollywood dudes. Through his degraded status as a “whipping boy” toy whose lot in life is to be “only” played with by little girls, Ken accrues pathos. The subtext — that little girls are low prestige toy owners and confer shame upon any “male” toy forced to associate with them — reveals that the Hollywood dudes have thoroughly assimilated the message that female children are of lower status than male children, and actually do have cooties.” - The Bigelow Effect: People Talking About Pixar Firing Its First Female Director

San Diego: Day 3 – Point Loma, Parasailing, Sea World, La Jolla
I’ve been very negligent in posting about my trip, it’s terrible!
We only rented a car for one day while we were in San Diego, so we made sure to pack into one day all the things that were too far away for us to get to by walking. This is the world’s longest post because I have much anger to direct at Sea World.
San Diego: Day 2 – Maritime Museum
In planning our trip, Theresa and I noticed that we tend to vacation like our parents do: we go to msueums and historical sites and sporting events. The Maritime Museum definitely falls into the category of Things Our Parents Would See if they came to San Diego. Plus, we just like military and naval history in general, so there’s that.

San Diego: May 14
For my own sake and probably yours, I’m going to be breaking my trip posts into smaller chunks. I was going to go day by day, but even that proved to be a lot of text to devour so I’ll just wing it with where to cut things off. (My decision making process, let me show it to you.)

dead man’s island
I’m back from San Diego! I haven’t even begun organizing my photos or putting together some posts on our trip, so in the mean time I will leave you with some kissing sea lions that we saw in the wild at the Coronado Islands.

in which I try to be less anti-social
I’ve become a disturbingly busy person lately.
- I’m going to San Diego with my sister Theresa in a little over a week. As is usually the case with me, I’ve only got about 50% of the things we’re doing planned and the stuff that is planned is mostly the stuff Theresa wants to do. Much of my interest lies in various museum-related activities so those aren’t terribly difficult to schedule. Still. California! (By way of Denver! Because there are no direct flights from Toronto to San Diego!)
- Hot Docs is on right now so I’ve been checking things out here and there. So far I’ve seen DISH: Women, Waitressing & The Art of Service, Disco and Atomic War, Marwencol, and A Film Unfinished. I’ve got one more on Friday, only I can’t for the life of me remember what it’s called.
- Doors Open is on May 29 and 30. I’ve never gone before — free cultural events bring the crowds and crowds make me run in the opposite direction — but in an effort to leave the house more often, I think I’m going to try and check some stuff out. I wish the website had a way you could see buildings by location since the alphabetical listing doesn’t help me all that much.
- I want to go to this lecture: Out of the Vaults: How to Build a Dinosaur with Jack Horner. Am I normally a lecture person? I wouldn’t know, because I haven’t willingly attended one that wasn’t part of a post-secondary education context. Time to find out!
And that’s that. My running regime is suffering somewhat from my going out all the time.
