The Counterfeiters

It’s nice to see a Holocaust movie that deals with something other than abject suffering.

IMDB Plot Synopsis The Counterfeiters is the true story of the largest counterfeiting operation in history, set up by the Nazis in 1936.

  1. If they ever decide to remake this movie as an English-language film, the Karl Markovics role could be played by Jason Statham, I swear. These guys look ridiculously similar.
  2. I feel weird admitting that I really like Holocaust movies (Audrey and I actually watch Schindler’s List for fun because it’s such an effing phenomenal movie), but this one felt a little more fresh than other offerings on the subject because they avoided using a lot of the typical “Hey, this is a Holocaust movie” tricks of the trade (piles of suitcases, people going through discarded clothing, sifting through heaps of gold teeth, etc.). I know it’s visual shorthand and a quick way to set the scene, but I figure we’ve all seen enough movies about this that we can pick up on the cues even when they’re not there.
  3. Also, I’m pretty effing sick of the jolly German Sturmbannführer who has a round red face, twinkle in his eye, and laughs at nearly everything. There’s one in every movie.
  4. I don’t really have too much to say about this one, to be honest, because it’s a weird type of thing to review. It’s a nice tale of duelling morals and brings up a lot of grey areas in a subject matter that can usually be so obviously black and white.
